sound card and pcmcia whack-a-mole

I am going nuts here, my laptop seems to need some strange mix between a
2.2 kernel and a 2.4 kernel.

When I boot with a 2.4 kernel(2.4.17, or 2.4.18) cardmgr recognizes my
network card just fine(3C574). But I can't get sound to work (non pnp
ES1878) even with alsa, even with disabling isapnp(which doesn't seem to
work properly).

When I boot into 2.2.20 I can make the sound card work, but my network
card is detected as a memory_cs. (yes, i know to switch between
yenta_socket and i82365) Cardctl ident gives 'no product info available'

Which kernel do I need to go with? what am I doing wrong? Thanks very
much for your help.
