MPLayer

will work with DivX. It is mostly GPL but contains
some parts that cannot be distributed as binaries.
Due to this and patent issues it cannot be
distributed with Debian
http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/unable-to-package
Your posting is perhaps a little off-topic for
Debian laptop (as it is not a laptop-specific
issue), and might have been better put
to Debian user.
