sound on VAIO FX401

Dear all,

I downloaded the sound driver from http://www.4front-tech.com/linux.html.
After I recompiled the kernel to exclude any sound driver, I try to
install this driver: osslinux396b-2x.tar.gz for my VIA97 card.

After the files were installed I typed /usr/local/lib/oss/soundon as
suggested by the install script. I got:

############################################
This Open Sound System copy is licensed for limited evaluation use only.
You can order the permanent OSS license using the 'Order permanent OSS license'
function of soundconf command. Alternatively use our ordering page at

IMPORTANT!

The following OSS drivers required for your current
hardware configuration: VIA97

While these drivers _are_ included in this evaluation version
they don't belong to the base price of OSS software.
Remember to select them while ordering the permanent OSS license.
*** OSS will _NOT_ work in your system without these drivers. ***

To make the ordering process easier we have created a prefilled
HTML order form in /usr/local/lib/oss/order.html.
Use the 'Order permanent OSS license' function of soundconf
to order the license.

See /usr/local/lib/oss/soundon.log for more info.

The /usr/local/lib/oss/soundon.log is attach at the end of this message.

So, the sound fail to initialize. If I try to run something with sound I
get:

Error opening device: /dev/dsp
Error during initialisation of soundcard.

as root or normal user.

The card is not broken as it run OK with the windows xp which come with
the computer.

I run Debian 3.0 (woody) on a 2.4.16 kernel on my VAIO FX401 notebook.

Please, some help.

Thank you,
	Ionel
