Simultaneous internal/external monitor on Dell Latitude CPx

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was able to run both the LCD and an external
monitor simultaneously on a Dell Latitude CPx.  I am able to use one or
the other, but not both.

I'm told that this is handled by the X server, though this surprises me.
I've never had to do any modification of XF86Config to allow swicthing
between internal and external modes.

The machine uses an ATI Rage Mobility chipset.

Any insight would be hugely appreciated.
