I don't know the answer to your other questions, but hibernation basically means taking a snapshot of your system and storing it in a file on your hard drive. When the machine next boots, the file is read and everything(more or less) restored. Standby and suspend shut lots of stuff down(suspend more so than standby), but the processor and the memory will still be active.
