i am not sure if this is really an issue of the pcmcia-cs package.
you said that others (exact the same machines) did in fact work.
tried the cards of the other machines? didn't work? tried a completely
different card? didn't work? then it might be an issue of your hardware.
pcmcia controller?

but you are speaking about compiling. that's rather easy.

is a very useful doc. you are installing base from HDD right?
i do not have the possibility to try it out here, but it shouldn't be
that difficult. something like, compile it on another machine, then
unpack base.tgz and copy over de new pcmcia-package by hand.
but about this proces someone else on this list might have more
experience.
