A colleague had a similar problem with his Sharp Mebius (also with an ATI
Rage Mobility). Here is how he could solve it:

He generated a starting point using a tool (xf86config or something like
that). Then, he tried changing the ModeLine by hand (he thinks that it was
only the last value that he had to change). Now, his config file looks like
this:

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "mebius"
    HorizSync 31.5 - 57.0
    VertRefresh 50-100
    ModeLine "1024x768" 65.15 1024 1040 1136 1312 768 768 771
816 +HSync +VSync
EndSection
Section "Device"
    Identifier "rage"
    Driver "ati"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "rage"
    Monitor "mebius"
    DefaultDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection
