problem with SMC wireless lan: no device file ?
Hi,
I'm halfway through installing debian (potato) on a IBM Thinkpad 390.
All has gone well to this point but now I need the network to get
packages, and all I have is a SMC2632W wireless lan card.
The potato PCMCIA setup recognized the card and loaded the wvlan_cs
driver. I downloaded a copy of the wireless-tools to configure the card,
and that seems to work too. IE, after boot (or /etc/init.d/pcmcia
restart) ifconfig shows the card configured, as does iwconfig.
The default route has been installed properly too.
But pings to other machines just time out (no errors). The only other
symptoms of failure are an error message from the wvlan_cs driver (which
does not seem fatal) and the fact that no device file (/dev/eth0)
is created.
Here is the dmesg output:

And iwconfig:

(names changed to protect the paranoid). All this seems correct (the AP
MAC address is right, for instance. And the led on the card is steady
amber, indicating a solid connection.
Here is ifconfig's output:

Note that there are some TX packets (from my ping attempts), but nothing
ever comes back.
I'm stuck! Any ideas ?
Thanks very much for any help you can give,
Alan
