gpm is mouse support for the console. It grabs the mouse data and does
strange things to it. To stop it, run (as root)
  /etc/init.d/gpm stop
To stop it permanently, "apt-get remove gpm".

You might be able to fix it by editing /etc/gpm.conf. I have:

,----[ /etc/gpm.conf ]
| device=/dev/psaux
| responsiveness=
| repeat_type=raw
| type=ps2
| append=""
`----

Then edit your XF86Config so that X uses /dev/gpmdata as the mouse device.

Yeah. It's supposed to be there. (It's only there for blackbox -- the
other wm's don't have it.) I can't say that I've used blackbox much, so
I can't tell you what it is. I think something to do with virtual
desktops or some such thing.
