What "switching tool" are you talking about?
To switch the system-wide default, you can try (as root)
"update-alternatives --config x-window-manager". To just switch your
own account, make a .Xsession file in your directory, with contents
"exec qvwm" (or whatever the window manager's executable is called).
(note: this will work in sid -- it may or may not work in potato).
