I have done the same thing but when i upgrade to kernel 2.4.7, i try to 
compile the pcmcia (card bus) support into the kernel ... and it fails 
when i start the daemon the machine freeze. 

It was working right with 2.2.18pre1 kernel and pcmcia-cs as you say... 
has someone encounter this trouble ?
