I see the same effects on a Thinkpad A20p with an M3 chip (rage
mobility 128).
It's just munging the font, as a consolechars -d will restore it.
OTOH, it munges the font whenever you switch back to X, not just on
startup. I posted to newbie@xfree86.org about this and haven't heard
anything. I think it may need to be posted to xpert.
I don't think it's a Debian-specific problem.
