OFF TOPIC - testing:ssh

sorry for the off-topic, but this is the one list i'm subscribed to and
the people here seem pretty smart :)

i have a problem with the testing version of the ssh client. there are 2
symptoms:
(1) as a regular user, it gives me a 'permission denied' error. it works
fine as the superuser though.
(2) when using rsync through ssh (to sync to a remote server), any files
written to the local machine belong to "3000.3125" (seemingly non-existent
UID and GID).

there is some weird interaction with UID/GID settings, but i can't figure
out where. any thoughts?

Thanks,
craig
