Getting the sound card recognized is the first step. If you're not
sure what sound card is installed, lspci may be able to tell you.
Look for something like "Multimedia Audio Controller" - if it doesn't
list a name for the chipset, it should list a vendor/device ID, which
you can search for on Google.
Another good place to look is http://www.linux-laptop.net - a quick
search for your Thinkpad model revealed 3 how-tos, which should be
tasty reading (although some may be redhat-specific, you may be able
to glean information about what hardawre you have and which drivers to
load =) )
