I've been using Gnome and gpm for months without issues.  It works perfectly with every X application I use.  I didn't use gpmconfig either, I set it up using XF86Setup and here's my mouse section in XF86Config:

Section "Pointer"
   Protocol        "Microsoft"
   Device          "/dev/mouse"
   BaudRate        1200
   Emulate3Timeout 50
   Resolution      100
   Buttons         3
   Emulate3Buttons
EndSection

[I even copied that section over to emacs from a terminal window with the mouse]

I believe I've used gpmdata as the device before and it worked too.

My PC is a Dell Latitude CPx J series with both the touchpad and 'eraser head' style mice along with the PS2 interface to plug a regular mouse in.  It all works perfectly.
