Makes no difference - yes/no, true/false, 1/0 (iirc) are
interchangeable.

Hmm. I was sure that it _was_ needed, but given your experience I
reinstalled tpconfig (finally in the Debian binaries) and tried again
- viola! "tpconfig --tapmode=0" works great.

Obviously not, but I'm not the only person who had gathered that you
had to use gpm.

I'm still not exactly sure what tapmode does, but it doesn't disable
tapping altogether - I still use it for left clicks - it just makes
it manly (ie, insensitive :-) ).

I just downloaded as-is from debian testing, and no problem on 2.4.9
Thanks for giving me the impetus to finally get mine working right -
now to see if I can teach it that a corner tap is a middle-button
click!
