Try
 mplayer foo.avi -vo dga
or
 mplayer foo.avi -vo sdl:dga

and disable OSD (as there isn't enought memory do use double buffering
to disable OSD flickering - i'll post a question about that in the
mplayer list, 'kay).

What XFree86 Server do you use?
