I had similar problems with my Inspiron 4000 but got it to work with the
following config:

,----[ /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ]
| Section "InputDevice"
| Identifier "Mouse0"
| Driver	"mouse"
| Option	"Protocol" "MouseSystems"
| Option	"Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
| Option	"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
| EndSection
`----

,----[ /etc/gpm.conf ]
| device=/dev/psaux
| repeat_type=msc
| type=synps2
`----

ciao
