That at least means you've got it working... only in the wrong protocol
mode. Check your gpm/X mouse configuration and see what protocol your
mouse is currently setup for. It will probably not be plain PS/2 which
is what most touchpads are.

I've got my system set up like this:

gpm: use /dev/psaux as PS/2 device (Interal touchpad and optional
external PS/2 mouse)
X: /dev/input/mice as Scrolling MouseManPlusPS/2 mouse, and /dev/psaux
as generic PS/2 mouse (X supports multiple mice)

So check your config files :)
