I would recommend instead masqmail, this works nicely under xinetd (or
even inetd) so memory requires are low.  You can then add scripts to
/etc/ppp/ipup.d/ to send the mail when your connection is up etc.

masqmail is iffy at first to setup, mainly because a few features are not
so well documentated so you will need trial and error to sort them out.
Remember to sort out one service at a time.  But as suggested, I would use
mutt (with its pop support to get your mail) and masqmail to actually send
the stuff (if not masqmail look at 'nullmailer').  This will keep your
cpu/memory requirements down and everything will be easy enough to setup
transparently.

of course if you need any help mail me you masqmail configuration files
(I'm still doing battle with mutt, as I used to use pine and am finding
the move over awkward :) )
