Hmm. Which version is in testing? (Run "ssh -V".)

How are you running ssh? Does it give 'permission denied' right away
and then quit? If not, please post the entire output. Are you logging
in locally or over the network?

Try using "ssh -v -v" (verbose mode -- I think two -v's should be
enough). See if that gives any clue.

It might also help to get two terminals open, one logged in as root. In
the root shell, do "/etc/init.d/ssh stop" to stop the daemon, then
"sshd -d" to run the server in debug mode. Then in the other shell, try
logging in using "ssh -v -v localhost".

That is awfully strange. Can you ssh into the remote server, and run
"id"? What version of ssh is the remote server running?

I'm assuming that when you say "sync to a remote server" that you mean
that the files on the remote server are being updated?
