I noticed the fetchmail FAQ suggested setting the MRU (see
/etc/ppp/options) to 552 (default was 1500 or something).
It seemed to help a little for me although I still have major issues
with my modem (Xircom RealPort 56G/100, I think it gets itself too hot
:( )
