Oops, my situation is exactly the opposite. I can do the (OR) LCD/CRT
switching while on X but nothing happens when I am in console mode
(CTL-Alt-F1 for example). I though this was normal but now you make me
wonder whether my configuration is really weird.

Well, I have no plans to fiddle with 2.4 at this time.
