A whole lot of things are changing with Linux cardbus support in the kernel.
Cardbus network devices are becoming part of the Linux hotplugging scheme
(usb, pci, networking). In order to utilize your cardbus xircom device in the
Linux 2.4 kernel you will need to apt-get install hotplug. You can learn more
about hotplug at http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/ .

I highly suggest that you also read the pcmcia-cs developers' words of wisdom
about PCMCIA and the 2.4 kernel. It is available at
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/README-2.4 .

Finally, if you would like to hear (and see!) for yourself the status of the
Linux 2.4 Hotplug situation, checkout http://www.osdn.com/conferences/kernel/
. There you will find links to Real video/audio feeds from the OSDN Kernel
Summit. About half-way down the page is a link to either a 56K or 128K feed
entitled "Hot Plug" by Johannes Erdfelt.

Good Luck,
