Because this problem occurs with Gnome, but not with KDE, I would suggest checking esd (does `killall esd` or `killall -KILL esd` stop the problem?)  If the problem _is_ with esd, you may be able to fix it by recompiling as somebody else explained (should be in the archives for this month or last).

This might also be an IRQ problem...you'll want to check /proc/ioports and /proc/iomem.  If your box locks up when trying to read either of those files, then you definitely have an IRQ problem...unfortunately...I don't know how to fix them (Is IRQ Steering possible on a lappie?)

Also, could you give some more details about your setup? (kernel, /proc/ioports, etc)
