I'm still curious to know what kind of not working it does.  But with one
machine, I found if I had a framebuffer kernel, all the evil things it did
when I left X (10-30% chance of screwup) were cleared by the framebuffer's
console support.  

(note: the screwup in my case was video only.  I could issue commands that
sounded like things and tell they were "being normal" by what they sounded
like.   And shutdown fine.  So if part of the wrongness is that it never
gives the keyboard back, this might not help.)

Hopefully this is enough to get our picturebook fan going, I'm really 
looking forward to hearing the whole solution now.
