yes. It hangs with the card both inserted and not.

These are the things that i know (specifically)
will hang the system

1.  running 'probe' in the pcmcia package
2. running 'cardmgr' under /cardmgr

i believe you adressed the problem
about how when port scans are done it will hang the
system ( it was in PCMCIA HOWTO that was included in the
package)

So i think it is something about port scans that are done
when a 'probe' is done
or when i run 'cardmgr' which i belivee does 'probe' also?
