Actually, since he wants to use KDM and not XDM, removing XDM via dselect 
*is* the best solution in this case.  

Also - to get to ttys after X starts up (either by XDM or startx), use the 
CTL-ALT-F1 (thru F6) keys.  CTL-ALT-F7 will get you back to your X console.
