I just installed Debian on my HP3000 laptop.  It uses the Neomagic
video chipset.  After the config of X11, all looks good except the
cursor pointer is a large square image of vertical bars.  About 1 inch
square.

  I found a lot of useful information on what options to use in XF86Config,
in chipset-specific documentation at http://www.sanpei.org/Laptop-X/note-list.html.
Otherwise, the site http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
may have some info too.
