Off screen

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Portégé 620CT and a Debian slink distribution.
Two behaviors:

1) A X window server is not running :
----------------------------

I close the screen, I wait some times, I open the screen.
  The screen is off.
I click the "mouse" or I type a caracter: The screen is on.
  Good.

2) A X window is running :
----------------------------

I close the screen, I wait some times, I open the screen.
  The screen is off.
I click the "mouse" or I type a caracter: The screen is still off.
  Bad.

The solution I found until now are :

A) Change the run level to 1.
-----------------------------
A heavy solution. Just to say I don't have to reboot entirely :-)

B) Let the battery be down
--------------------------
And restart. A heavy solution two since gpm become problematic, not
to talk about X and then the kernel (seems to work until a swap).
   fsck ...

Any solution ?

Thanks in advance.
