This sounds like a reasonable solution.  I may do that or I may
actually just upgrade to another version later.  The 2.2 kernel still
works (I obviously kept it as a backup) and I have no great need to
upgrade, yet.

I don't mind trying different suggestions if it will help testing,
though.
