Fichero y archivo son sinónimos
En el sentido informático, son sinónimos.Los objetos físicos a los que refiere las respectivas analogías, no son sinónimos. Fichero es: caja o mueble con cajones donde se pueden guardar ordenadamente las fichas. Archivo es: Conjunto ordenado de documentos que una persona/sociedad/institución producen en el ejercicio de sus funciones o actividades. Considero "archivo" más próximo al objeto referido en la analogía.

File is: ordered set of documents that a person/society/institution produce in the exercise of their functions or activities. I consider "archivo" closer to the object referred to in the analogy.
yo utilizo principalmente la palabra archivo, pero en algunos países utilizan la palabra fichero por ejemplo en España.
Independientemente de mi párrafo anterior, en la práctica aquí en España en mi entorno se usa mayormente "archivo" y no "fichero", excepto las personas que usan mucho el inglés en su trabajo que prefieren "fichero" probablemente por su mayor parecido al inglés "file" (estas personas también tienden a llamar las bibliotecas como "librerías", por el parecido de "librería" con "library" aunque esto es un caso de "falso amigo" porque el inglés "library" es el español "biblioteca" y el español "librería" es el inglés "bookshop").
Regardless of my previous paragraph, in practice here in Spain in my environment "archivo" is mostly used and not "fichero", except for people who use English a lot in their work who prefer "fichero" probably because of its greater similarity to the English "file" (these people also tend to call libraries as "librerías", because of the similarity of "librería" with "library" but it is a case of "false friend" because the English "library" is the Spanish "biblioteca" and the Spanish "librería" is the English "bookshop").
