Acho que ele quis dizer: tente e evite, ou tente e
abstenha, ou tente e abdique, mas a idéia era de uma
afirmação como: além de tentar, não faça. :) Talvez tente e
"abra mão". ;)
Eu olhei o "define" do Google e encontrei o seguinte:
1. not do something;
2. the part of a song where a soloist is joined by a group
of singers
3. abstain: choose no to consume; "I abstain from alcohol"

O (2) é claramente "refrão", mas o (1) e o (3) se
encaixam no que precisamos.
