previous
week in Banja Luka, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has
been a great success for the Debian Project.</p>

<p><q>DebConf is a vital event for Debian, both as a Free Software
distribution and as a project. To the distribution, DebConf offers "high
bandwidth" time that volunteers use to have socialise while hacking on
Debian. To the project, DebConf offers long lasting enthusiasm and the
ability to smooth the grudges which can be accumulated while communicating over the
Internet.</q> Stefano Zacchiroli, Debian Project Leader explains the importance
of the conference: <q>DebConf11 in Banja Luka has
been great on both sides and has also shown to many of us a culture and a
part of the world we were not familiar with. We will be back!</q>

<p>DebConf was preceded by DebCamp, an opportunity for contributors,
developers and teams to meet and work on specific issues and discuss face
to face. As an example, the development team of Debian's installation system
met, and
<a href="http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Debconf11Summary";>amongst other changes</a>
integrated the recently released Linux Kernel 3.0,
improved the ports to the kFreeBSD and Hurd architectures, fixed issues
when using braille displays, and started the first integration steps of the
<q>CUT/rolling</q> release.</p>
<p>Der DebConf ging das DebCamp voran, eine Möglichkeit für Untersützer,
Entwickler und Teams, sich zu treffen und von Angesicht zu Angesicht an
bestimmten Themen zu arbeiten. Beispielsweise traf sich das Entwicklerteam des
Debian-Installationssystems und integrierte (neben
<a href="http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Debconf11Summary";>anderen
Änderungen</a>) den kürzlich veröffentlichten Linux-Kernel 3.0, verbesserte
die Portierungen auf kFreeBSD- und Hurd-Architekturen, behob Probleme mit
Braillezeilen und startete die ersten Integrationsschritte des

<p>Other improvements done during DebCamp include the development of
<a href="http://dde.debian.net/debchanges/";>RSS feeds</a> about the actual
content of the FTP archive, which will significantly ease the development
of services using this information.</p>

Entwicklung von <a href="http://dde.debian.net/debchanges/";>RSS-Feeds</a> zum

<p>A hot topic during DebCamp and DebConf was
<a href="http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/747.en.html";>Multiarch</a>
(see also <a href="$(HOME)News/2011/20110726b">the separate announcement</a>) which makes make programs
and libraries of different hardware architectures easily usable in
parallel on the same system. For instance, the Embedded GNU C library
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/glibc";>eglibc</a> has seen some
development to support multiarch. Other highlights of the conference program
include
<a href="http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/705.en.html";><q>Delivering
Multi-Platform Applications</q> by Bdale Garbee</a> or the
<a href="http://penta.debconf.org/dc11_schedule/events/795.en.html";>ARM BoF
session</a> which showed interesting details about the coming <q>armhf</q>
port.</p>

der Unterstützung von Multiarch Entwicklung erfahren. Andere Highlights des

<p>During DebConf the video team consisting of about 50 volunteers managed to
provide live streams for over
70 of the sessions, while recording 65 hours of video resulting in
800GB of data to be reviewed. After post processing the videos will be made
available on
<a href="http://meetings-archive.debian.net/pub/debian-meetings/2011/debconf11/";>our
meetings archive</a>. Users may also thank the video team via a

<p>The Debian Conference was attended by over 400 contributors from over
70 countries ranging as far as New Zealand, Taiwan and Brazil. Beside the
original scheduled 78 sessions, about 30 additional sessions where
scheduled during the conference.</p>

<p>Électricité de France S.A. is pleased to announce that its new supercomputer,
which is 200 Tflops and 43rd in the latest <a href="http://www.top500.org/system/10804";>TOP500 (June 2011)</a>, is based on
Debian Squeeze.</p>
<p>Èlectricité de France S.A. freut sich, bekanntgeben zu dürfen, dass ihr neuer
Superrechner, welcher mit seinen 200 TFlops den 43. Rang der
<a href="http://www.top500.org/system/10804";>TOP 500 (Juni 2011)</a> erreicht,
mit Debian Squeeze läuft.</p>

<p>This supercomputer, called Ivanoe, is made of compute nodes, graphical nodes,
connexion servers and infrastructure servers. This represents 1454 IDataPlex
IBM Servers and 200 Tflops.</p>
<p>Dieser Supercomputer namens Ivanoe besteht aus Rechenknoten und Grafikknoten
sowie Verbindungs- und Infrastrukturservern. Die 1454 IDataPlex-IBM-Server

<p>Compute nodes, graphical nodes and connexion servers are fully diskless and
bootstrap thanks to the <a href="$(HOME)/CD/live/"><q>Debian
Live Project</q></a>, but we still have servers
that are installed on disk thanks to <a href="http://fai-project.org/";><q>Fully Automatic Installation</q></a> which
are configured by <a href="http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/puppet";><q>Puppet</q></a>.</p>

<p>To achieve this installation EDF teams of engineers had to integrate several
proprietary software components in the Debian environment, more precisely the
General Parallel File System (GPFS) which is an IBM product and the Infiniband
QLogic driver which is used for the Infiniband network.</p>
<p>Um diese Installation zu verwirklichen, mussten die EDF-Ingenieursteams
mehrere proprietäre Softwarekomponenten in die Debian-Umgebung einpflegen;
um genau zu sein das General Parallel File System (GPFS) von IBM und den

<p>The system image has been generated based on the offical Debian repository and
is made up of 900 packages. The packages installed match the requirements for
the EDF calculus software that is used by the company.</p>

<p>EDF has chosen an homogenisation strategy for its scientific computing based on
a common stack of software, namely Debian. An internal team of engineers is in
charge of developing and adapting the distribution to match the specific needs
of scientific computing. Debian at EDF represents 1050 workstations dedicated
to scientific usage and 9 beowulf clusters which represent 2132 compute nodes.</p>
