German hyphenation patterns in latex

Hi,

I'm a spanish translator and currently I'm working in the translation of
tetex-bin debconf templates, recently switched to the po-debconf format.

One of the questions displays a long list of choices about hyphenation
patterns to load in latex. Two of the recent additions to the list are:

german[=austrian-alte_Rechtschreibung]
ngerman[=naustrian-neue_Rechtschreibung]

My knowledge of german is very limited but I seem to understand that they
refer to two different Austrian writing variants of german, the old and
the new one, but I'm not really sure...

If anyone could please give me certain background in english, therefore
I may provide a better translation in my language.
