<p>The
<a href="http://www.cesvima.upm.es";>Supercomputing and Visualization Center of Madrid</a>
(CeSViMa), which is part of the
<a href="http://www.upm.es/internacional";>Technical University of Madrid</a> and
houses <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magerit";>Magerit</a>, one of the
most powerful supercomputers in Spain, has chosen Debian as
host and guest operating system for its
<a href="http://www.cesvima.upm.es/services/virtualization";>new service of
Virtual Private Servers (VPS)</a>, for the research community and public.

<toc-add-entry name="debconf">DebConf, past and future</toc-add-entry>

<p>
While the local DebConf team is well into the preparation of 
<a href="http://debconf14.debconf.org/";>DebConf14</a>
which will take place in Portland, Oregon, USA during 23â??31 August 2014,
the DebConf committee decided during their last meeting that DebConf15,
the 16th annual Debian Conference,
<a href="http://blog.debconf.org/blog/debconf15/rh_dc15-in-germany-dc13-final-report-20140309.dc";>will
be hosted in Germany</a>. Details about
location and date will be announced in the coming months.
A dedicated <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debconf15-team/";>mailing list</a>
has been created for the organisation and interested people are welcome to
subscribe and join the discussion.

Furthermore, the 32-page final report for
<a href="http://debconf13.debconf.org/";>DebConf13</a>
in Vaumarcus, Switzerland, is now
<a href="http://media.debconf.org/dc13/report/DebConf13-final-report.en.pdf";>available</a>.
It provides interesting facts about the organisation of the event and the
experience of participants.

<toc-add-entry name="vote">Upcoming votes in the Debian Project: DPL elections and a code of conduct</toc-add-entry>

<p>Kurt Roeckx, <a href="$(HOME)/devel/secretary">Debian project secretary</a>,
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00000.html";>opened</a>
the project leader elections. This year, two candidates nominated themselves:
<a href="$(HOME)/vote/2014/platforms/lucas">Lucas Nussbaum</a>, current DPL, and
<a href="$(HOME)/vote/2014/platforms/neilm">Neil McGovern</a>.
During the campaign candidates will answer questions on the
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-vote";>debian-vote mailing list</a>
until March 30, after which Debian Members will have two weeks to send their votes.
</p>

<p>
Kurt also
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00006.html";>announced</a>
that a general resolution has been started about a code of conduct,
initiated by Wouter Verhelst.

<p>
Lucas Nussbaum sent his
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00001.html";>monthly
report of DPL activities for the end of January and February 2014</a>.

Lucas mentioned the ongoing work by Stefano Zacchiroli,
the <a href="http://sfconservancy.org/";>Software Freedom Conservancy</a> and
<a href="http://www.spi-inc.org/";>SPI</a> to offer Debian contributors the
possibility to transfer the copyright of their contributions to a
<q>trusted</q> organisation.

Lucas also forwarded to <a href="http://france.debian.net/";>Debian France</a>,
<a href="http://debian.ch/";>Debian.ch</a> and
<a href="http://www.ffis.de/";>FFIS</a> the list of
<a href="http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DPL/TrustedOrganizationCriteria";>evaluation
criteria</a> to become a trusted organisation, authorised to
accept and hold assets for Debian.

In <a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00002.html";>another
message</a>, Lucas appointed Nicolas Dandrimont and Sylvestre Ledru as admins
for Debian participation in the Google Summer of Code 2014.

<toc-add-entry name="bits-security">Bits from the Security Team</toc-add-entry>

<p>
Moritz Muehlenhoff sent
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00004.html";>some
bits from the Security Team</a>.
The Security Team met on the first weekend of February at the
Linux Hotel in Essen.
They discussed several improvements for the Debian security tracker and
the security release workflow, as well as changes in the security archive, such
as the possibility to allow maintainers not part of the Security Team to
release security updates on their own through a mechanism similar to the
procedure to grant upload privileges to Debian Maintainers.
Distribution hardening was also mentioned: currently, more than 95% of
security-sensitive packages and packages with priority standard or above
are currently hardened using dpkg-buildflags. 
Last but not least, the Security Team considers that at the moment it seems
likely that an extended security support timespan for Squeeze is possible.
The plan is to go ahead, and provide updates for a <q>long term support</q> for Squeeze
in a separate suite where everyone in the Debian keyring can
upload in order to minimise bottlenecks and allow contributions by
all interested parties. The team needs help to make this effort sustainable.

the website <a href="http://popcon.debian.org";>popcon.debian.org</a>,
presenting the gathered results of Debian's
<a href="http://packages.debian.org/unstable/popularity-contest";>popularity contest</a>.
In particular it now uses a style matching the
<a href="$(HOME)">main Debian website</a>.

Enrico Zini
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00008.html";>announced</a>
that the <a href="http://sso.debian.org";>Debian Single SignOn</a> service can now
use not only the credentials of official
Debian Members, but also those from <a
href="http://alioth.debian.org/";>Alioth</a>, the Debian sourceforge.
At the moment, contributors with an Alioth account are able to log in
to <a href="http://contributors.debian.org";>contributors.debian.org</a>
with their Alioth password, and have access to detailed information about
their contributions. 
This will be extended to other Debian web services in the future.

Gunnar Wolf
<a href="http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/03/msg00003.html";>announced</a>
that the Debian keyring maintainers no longer consider 1024 bit long DSA
cryptographic keys to be trustable. They are asking Debian Members and
Maintainers still using this kind of key to move to a stronger key
(4096 bit RSA keys are recommended) as soon as possible.

brèves de l'équipe de sécurité</a>.
L'équipe de sécurité s'est réunie le premier weekend de février
au Linux Hotel de Essen.
Ils ont débattu de plusieurs améliorations du Debian security tracker et du
flux des communiqués de sécurité, aussi bien que des changements dans
l'archive sécurité, tel que la possibilité de permettre aux mainteneurs
non membres de l'équipe de sécurité de publier des mises à jour de sécurité,
de leur propre initiative, à travers un mécanisme analogue à la procédure
qui accorde des droits de téléchargement aux mainteneurs Debian.
Le renforcement de la distribution a aussi été mentionné : actuellement,
plus de 95 % des paquets sensibles sur le plan de la sécurité et les paquets
avec une priorité standard ou au-dessus sont à l'heure actuelle durcis en
utilisant dpkg-buildflags. Dernier point, mais non des moindres, l'équipe
de sécurité considère que en ce moment, il semble probable qu'une extension
de durée de soutien de sécurité de Squeeze soit possible.
Le plan est d'aller de l'avant et de fournir des mises à jour pour une
<q>prise en charge sur le long terme</q> de Squeeze dans une suite séparée
où tous ceux qui ont une clef de sécurité Debian pourront télécharger afin
de minimiser les goulots d'étranglement et de permettre les contributions de
toutes les parties intéressées. L'équipe a besoin d'aide pour que cet effort
soit viable. Tous ceux qui sont intéressés à aider à la mise en place
de ce soutien de sécurité étendu sont invités à contacter

que les responsables du trousseau Debian ne considèrent plus comme fiables les
clefs de chiffrement DSA de 1024 bits. Ils demandent aux membres et
aux responsables Debian qui utilisent encore ce type de clef de passer dès
que possible à des clefs plus robustes (les clefs RSA de 4096 bits sont
recommandées).
