My mistake.  I fixated on the part about purging nvidia-kernel-common,
but the main point of the message is to get people to fix their
xorg.conf.  So yeah, this is all as intended.

Would putting the file in /lib/modprobe.d be acceptable?  (See
/usr/share/doc/kmod/changelog.gz.)
