Well, the usage is the same in french. I remember some endless
hair-cutting discussions in with Tex-addicts in french
newsgroups.....when news were still interesting to read and
contribute..:-)
For each and every french translation I've worked on (including Debian
debconf templates and DDTS), we have decided to follow the established
use for "computer typography" : a dot is followed by a single space
and then it is up to the formatting software to do the job properly
according to the possibilities of its interface.
So, I still consider double spaces in package descriptions and debconf
templates a bug.
As far as I've understood, there does not seem to be a strong
objection (except by the maintainer, I guess...:-) if I re-open
189487.
