Thanks! I'm not sure why I haven't noticed this before; maybe I've been lucky. Given that both my locale and the file are both UTF-8 encodings, I'm not sure why any recoding took place! Actually, looking more closely at the raw email message for the attachment: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" That's incorrect, so is probably why it stripped out all the non-ASCII characters and replaced them with '?'s.
