knoppix 2 ... init 5 no longer works

Using Knoppix 9.2 (and I believe 9.1, not sure how far back) if you issue:

knoppix 2

at the boot: prompt it will boot up to the command prompt, but if you issue the command:

init 5

X does not start, instead you get the message:

init: must be run as PID 1

If you try:

startx

X will boot but not in the normal Knoppix way. There seems to be some scripts bypassed that make it behave differently.

If you instead issue:

sudo -u knoppix startx

X appears to start correctly (but some errors appear) and then you can use:

LXDE-Menu > Logout > Logout

to stop X and return to the console

(I don't know what the command-line equivalent of "init 2" woould be)

Probably, the "knoppix-cheatcodes.txt" paragraph:

If you would like to edit your X-Server configuration manually
(config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf), use "knoppix 2" to boot
into runlevel 2 (textmode only) and, after changing the X
configuration, start the X environment with "init 5". Note that
you can always leave the graphical environment with "init 2", and
restart it later with "init 5".

would need to be updated (unless you have some other solution).

P.S. If you edit the "knoppix-cheatcodes.txt" file, the cheatcode:

depth=

is referenced in the F3 cheatcode page, but not in the "knoppix-cheatcodes.txt" file.
