Persistent install with AES encryption

Hi,
I am an user for some time now, I use Knoppix more live a portable
operating system - I have a persistent install on a high performance
USB flashdrive and I selected the option to encrypt with AES-256 the
data, so each time I boot I have to enter my passphrase.
I wanted to know, how exactly is the AES encryption method implemented
in Knoppix? Is it safe can I trust it with sensitive data? I heard
that AES cipher is very strong, however it's all a matter of how it is
implemented. I wanted to know if the implementation for Knoppix is
open source or how is it done and if it's trusty.
Besides this, everything works great I am user of the 6.7 version.. I
saw there is a new release and installed that one to a CD also..
didn't see any difference between it and 6.7 are there any significant
changes besides Kernel ?
Thanks in advance for your kind reply.
