How did you set the root password? Did you use the "set password for
root" dialog from the "Knoppix" submenu, or a different utility?
I just tried this, it seems to work (tested with "/bin/su" which asks me
for the root password).

Another option would be setting the root password with "sudo passwd
root" in the shell. sudo from knoppix works without authentication.
What program are you using for setting the time?
