No cable autodetection!?
Hi all,
Some days ago a potential new Linux user came to me, curiously trying out this
strange new free operating system that can be started up from a DVD or a USB
flash drive.
Everything went smoothly until he wanted to go online and noticed that he
forgot to plug in the ethernet cable. No problem, I thought, just plug in the
cable and wait a few seconds. But, to my surprise, nothing happened. I had to
open konsole and call
$ sudo ifconfig eth0 up
$ sudo pump -i eth0
to establish a LAN connection. This really turned down my new hopeful
aspirant.
Today I tried the same with Debian Live (KDE) and everything worked like
expected. The nice thing here was that KNetworkManager was running and
providing an easy interface to all networking related stuff. Knoppix should
provide a similar solution.
Greetings
Ronny
