debugging threaded apps

Hi,

I had some trouble with debugging a threaded app, in Knoppix 5.0.1 I ran from the iso file with a persistant home.
I think it may have had something to do with libthread_db-1.0.so and or any of the related files being stripped. I could 
run debug builds, but any threads were not under gdb control. I am new at this, so maybe I did something wrong.
