RE: NX Server and Client X cookie erroor
Hello
I installed Knoppix 4.0.1 to an external hard drive about 6 months ago or so. I did manage to get FreeNX working (I was able to start/stop/resume sessions from my WinXP laptop). I have a vague recollection of xauth problems, but really can't remember what exactly the problem was / how I overcame it. I do remember activating logging for FreeNX (nxserver) and SSH to try to help me debug. My FreeNX installation stopped working 3 months or ago (I was trying to get it to work nicely with a Mac) and it hasn't been a priority since.
I'll try to have a look at home to see if I left any notes. I do remember slavishly reading and searching the FreeNX mailing list archives (I also posted a few questions there), which you should also browse/search:
http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/freenx-knx/ (to browse)
http://lists.kde.org/?l=freenx-knx&r=1&w=2 (to search)
I've been meaning to try out version 2 of NX from nomachine - you no longer have to buy a license for the personal (limited) version. Not sure how difficult to install, but their documentation looks fair so you might want to try that instead.

Hallo,
I failed, too! I am using KANOTIX now.The latest version was released some days ago. I think the versions on knoppix are too old. It is quite fast, btw! But I am useing just a xterm. A friend of mine is using KDE. It works, but the sessions are not closed properly.

Are you using a minidistro, like puppy? I got the same error there, because xauth is not provided!

ls -l /usr/bin/xauth /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth /usr/bin/X11/xauth
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30868 2006-08-12 13:29 /usr/bin/X11/xauth
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30868 2006-08-12 13:29 /usr/bin/xauth
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30868 2006-08-12 13:29 /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth
apt-file search xauth
shows it in package: xbase-clients
apt-get install xbase-clients
installs xauth on debian-like systems!
