I know that people who use it tend to really, really use it, however, I've been a UNIX programmer/sysadmin/user for almost 20 years and have never touched it. I wouldn't even notice were it gone from the distro.
I do use it, and I am distributing Knoppix CDs in my school and for us LaTeX is a must... scientific reports, documentation (just write it in LaTeX and then latex2html it), letters, slides.
