Actually, you _can_ make the change even on mounted
partitions on a running system. A decent document on the
subject can be found at
www.troubleshooters.com/linux/ext2toext3.htm
I converted two running Red Hat 9 systems, doing the
'tune2fs -j' while the partitions were mounted. YMMV. Make
a backup before attempting it.
