Probably you would also want to use the original lilo.conf...
So you would have to mount the root (and /boot) partition onto /mnt
(or any other free mount point) and run lilo -r /mnt.
If that still fails, you would use chroot to work entirely on your
harddisk: chroot /mnt and then: lilo
