Did you also try "pump -i eth0" before tcpdump?

This looks like a driver problem with your ethernet card or a bad
cable.

These log entries are not written by pump, it looks rather like the
dhcpcd (a different dhcp client). Which Knoppix version do you have?

dhcpd is the dhcp server, not the client. Knoppix should start pump
(the dhcp client) at boot time automatically. Again, are you using an
official Knoppix version?
