[debian-knoppix] call to dcop fails in 45xsession

I have modified /etc/X11/Xsession.d/45xsession
so that the background image is changed 
immediately after the call to ksplash, with

dcopserver
dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface setWallpaper /usr/local/lib/snofrix.png 1
dcopserver_shutdown

My peculiar problem is that this works just fine
so long as the system is on the hard disk, but
when I make an iso-image, the command fails.

Does anyone know why this might be?
Or how I could fix it?
